What is an acerola cherry?
Acerola is a small, bright red, cherry-like fruit from a tropical shrub. It's tart and thin-skinned and bruises easily, so most of the harvest is dried into powder or juiced soon after picking rather than shipped fresh to distant markets.
Where it comes from
Acerola grows on shrubs in the Caribbean, Central America and northern South America.
It's also called Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry, and it flowers and fruits several times a year.
