What is a bilberry?
A bilberry is a small, dark blue wild berry, a close cousin of the blueberry. Unlike most blueberries, it's dark all the way through, so its juice stains fingers purple. It's usually foraged in the wild, not farmed in rows.
Where it comes from
Bilberries grow on low shrubs in the forests and heaths of northern Europe.
They ripen in late summer, and people pick them by hand or with a wide-toothed berry comb.
