What is cocoa?
Cocoa comes from the seeds of the cacao tree. The beans are fermented, dried, roasted and ground, and pressing out the cocoa butter leaves solids that are powdered for baking and drinks. It tastes deeply chocolatey, rich and pleasantly bitter.
Where it comes from
Cacao trees grow in hot, humid rainforests near the equator, in West Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Their large pods grow straight from the trunk and branches.
